Uttara Shahani is a historian. She has research interests in the history of colonial South Asia, partitions, refugee regimes, Sindh, and the Sindh diaspora. She is working on a collaborative project with Dr Anne Irfan on refugee regimes in Palestine-Israel and India-Pakistan in the aftermath of partition. Her work focuses on histories of bordering, especially in South Asia, citizenship and the relationship between legal regimes and migrants, themes of difference and displacement in colonial South Asia, and how the colonial past shapes the present for refugees and migrants.
