Ian's research focuses on issues of exclusion and inclusion in educational settings. He is interested in the ways that conflicting policy motives around inclusion and school performance may in practice produce perverse incentives for schools to exclude students who are most marginalised or at risk. His work looks at transitions for children and young people within and across educational settings from a cultural historical perspective.
